Website Redesign Washington: Protect Rankings
Washington splits at the Cascades. Most search demand sits in the Seattle–Tacoma–Bellevue corridor along Puget Sound, while Spokane and the Tri-Cities behave as separate eastern markets with their own local results. Sites that grew in pieces across that divide often end up with a tangle of city pages and a navigation that no longer makes sense. Our website redesign work in Washington State rebuilds that structure around the pages that already rank, then launches behind a tested redirect map.
A Washington site that grew in pieces usually hides its best performers. Before any design work, we pull every URL the site has ever published, from analytics, Search Console, the sitemap and old crawls, and match each one to the organic traffic, inquiries and search terms it still carries. That is how the orphans turn up: a Tacoma page no menu links to anymore that still ranks across the South Sound, or a Bellevue page from an earlier expansion that quietly sends in most of the contact forms. We note which elements visitors actually engage with on each one, so the redesign keeps them on purpose rather than by luck. Every page on that list is protected and changes only with a reason attached. This prevents the familiar Washington failure, where one tidy Puget Sound page replaces several older city pages that each ranked locally, and the new site looks better while it earns less.
Washington's search geography shapes the new architecture. Demand concentrates in the Seattle–Tacoma–Bellevue corridor along Puget Sound, while Spokane, on the far side of the Cascades, is a distinct eastern market with its own competitors and its own local results. Vancouver sits on the Columbia River across from Portland, so its searchers often see results from both sides of the state line. Olympia, at the southern end of the Sound, has its own local pack. We plan content strategy and information architecture around those markets before visual design starts, test prototypes with real users where the stakes justify it, and build to the same performance and accessibility standards as a new site. Titles and headings pair the state name with a city or with the word state, so neither Google nor a reader misreads which Washington the page means.
The Spokane templates often go live on their own, separate from the Puget Sound release, because an eastern Washington market with its own local results is easier to watch in isolation. Where the site cannot be split by region, we release one template at a time or send a share of visitors to the new design first. Every legacy URL left over from years of piecemeal growth is mapped to its closest new equivalent and tested in pre-launch QA, including the forgotten pages that still rank in Olympia or Vancouver searches. After launch we check indexation and rankings daily, reporting the Seattle–Tacoma–Bellevue corridor, Spokane and Vancouver separately, so a dip in one market cannot hide inside another's totals. A lost ranking is then caught within days, while the fix is still a redirect or a template change, instead of months later at a quarterly review when the traffic is already gone.

The Washington search market
Search demand concentrates in the Seattle–Tacoma–Bellevue corridor. Spokane is a distinct market east of the Cascades, and Vancouver searches overlap with Portland, Oregon, across the Columbia River. "Washington" in a search often means Washington, D.C., so pages must make the state unmistakable.

Website Redesign Washington: Protect Rankings FAQ
Our business is in Vancouver, across the river from Portland. How does that affect the redesign?
It means your competitors are on both sides of the Columbia, and searchers may not care which state a result comes from. During the inventory we check which of your pages rank for Vancouver and wider metro searches, protect them, and make sure the new architecture states clearly that you are in Vancouver, Washington, so local signals stay intact.
Should Spokane get its own pages, separate from Seattle-area content?
If you serve both, usually yes. Spokane is a distinct market east of the Cascades, with different competitors and local results from the Puget Sound corridor. A single statewide page tends to rank in neither. If your current Spokane pages already earn traffic, they are protected and keep their URLs through the redesign.
How do you keep the word Washington in our titles from being misread?
By never letting it stand alone. On a Washington State redesign, titles, headings and location pages pair the name with a city such as Seattle, Tacoma or Spokane, or with the word state. That keeps the meaning clear to readers and to Google, and we check it across every template during pre-launch QA.
Can the redesign be run remotely for a business in Tacoma or Olympia?
It can, end to end. Discovery, architecture workshops, prototype reviews and launch checks all happen over video and shared documents, so the process is identical whether you are in Tacoma, Olympia or Spokane. What we need is access to your analytics, Search Console and the current site so the inventory reflects your real Washington traffic.
