Pennsylvania Website Redesign: Rankings-Safe Site Refresh

Philadelphia faces east toward the Atlantic seaboard and Pittsburgh looks west toward Ohio and the Midwest, so a Pennsylvania website redesign has to protect two very different search markets at once. We start by inventorying which pages earn rankings and inquiries in each metro, then rebuild around that protected list with a complete redirect map and a staged launch, so the new site keeps the traffic the old one already earned at both ends of the state.

Harrisburg, Lancaster and Allentown are not suburbs of either big metro. Each is its own search market, with its own local pack and far fewer serious competitors than Philadelphia or Pittsburgh, and the same holds for Erie up on the lake shore. Together they mean a Pennsylvania site can hold dozens of quiet pages that rank with little upkeep, and those are exactly the pages a redesign tends to damage. A plain Lancaster page or an old Allentown service page can draw steady inquiries while getting almost no internal attention, which makes it the first casualty when a new layout consolidates content. Our content and URL inventory records each of them: the terms it ranks for, the clicks Search Console credits it with and the conversions analytics attributes to it. Every central-state page that is pulling its weight goes onto a protected list before design work begins, and from then on it changes only with a reason attached.

Information architecture is settled before anyone opens a design file. We map how a visitor searching from Philadelphia, Pittsburgh or the central counties reaches the right page within two clicks, and which pages carry the regional terms each audience types, since a Pittsburgh searcher and a Harrisburg searcher rarely phrase a query the same way. Content strategy follows from that map: which pages stay, which merge behind a tested redirect, and which new ones fill a gap the inventory exposed. Only then does visual design start, built around the Pennsylvania pages that already perform rather than squeezing them into a template chosen on taste. Where the redesign touches the pages that drive most conversions, prototypes go in front of real users before we commit to a direction. The build meets the same performance and accessibility standards as a new site, so pages load as quickly on a phone in Erie or Lancaster as they do in downtown Philadelphia.

Every URL on the old site gets a destination before the new one goes live, including the Allentown, Erie and Harrisburg pages that are easiest to overlook, and that redirect map is tested in pre-launch QA instead of after Google finds the gaps. The rollout moves in pieces when the platform permits, for example the Philadelphia and Pittsburgh templates first and the central-county pages after them, or a share of visitors before everyone. Once the new site is live, we check indexation and rankings every day and split the reporting by region, so a slip in Pittsburgh queries or a lost local pack in Lancaster appears as its own line instead of disappearing inside Philadelphia's larger volume. That separation matters in a state with two big metros and a thin middle, because a problem confined to one region is caught within days and fixed while it is still small, rather than surfacing at the next quarterly review.

The Pennsylvania search market

Two large metros sit at opposite ends of the state, Philadelphia in the east and Pittsburgh in the west, and Philadelphia searches spill into New Jersey and Delaware. Between them, Harrisburg, Lancaster, Allentown and Erie are smaller markets where competition is far thinner and local results are easier to win.

Pennsylvania Website Redesign: Rankings-Safe Site Refresh FAQ

Do you treat Philadelphia and Pittsburgh searches differently during a redesign?

Yes. The two metros sit at opposite ends of Pennsylvania and draw on different competitive pools, so we baseline their rankings and conversions separately before anything changes. After launch, we report on each metro on its own, which means a drop in Pittsburgh visibility cannot hide behind stable Philadelphia numbers, and the reverse is equally true.

Our site has separate pages for Harrisburg, Lancaster and Allentown. Will the redesign merge them?

Only if the data says merging would help. Central and eastern Pennsylvania towns often have thinner competition, so a dedicated page can rank and convert well with little effort. If the inventory shows those pages earning traffic or inquiries, they go on the protected list and keep their own URLs, or get a tested redirect to an equally specific replacement.

Can you run a redesign for a business in Erie without coming on site?

Entirely. Discovery, inventory review, architecture workshops, prototype testing and launch checks all run over video calls and shared documents, which works the same in Erie as in Philadelphia. Being on the far northwest edge of Pennsylvania changes nothing about the process; what matters is access to your analytics, Search Console and current site.

Should our redesigned Philadelphia pages also target searches from South Jersey and Delaware?

Often, yes. The Philadelphia metro spills across the Delaware River into South Jersey and south into northern Delaware, so many people looking for a Philadelphia business are searching from Camden County or Wilmington. The inventory shows whether your current pages already draw that out-of-state traffic. If they do, the new architecture keeps those terms on the pages earning them; if not, we can plan dedicated pages instead of diluting the Philadelphia ones.
